Educational Pathways & Advising
At the heart of the Douglass experience are the Educational Pathways, which integrate academic courses, research, living-learning initiatives, and involvement in leadership programs, student organizations, and student activities. Pathways are a way to enhance your major or explore new avenues of interest that have little to no relationship to your major discipline. Pathways can also include study abroad excursions as well as stimulating internship and externship opportunities. You can even create your own self-designed Pathway tailored to your individual interests and goals. Pathways truly help you make the most of the many opportunities available to you at Douglass and Rutgers.
What are Educational Pathways?
Educational Pathways combine your particular academic focus with a number of significant co-curricular, or out-of-classroom experiences, which you'll choose based on your interests. Here's an example:
Samantha, Class of 2012, is a Douglass woman who is interested in global human rights and wishes to major in political science. To enhance her education and knowledge, she'll live in the Human Rights House (Global Village) and complete the International Certificate Program. She'll also join the Rutgers student chapter of Amnesty International, and perhaps undertake study abroad next year.
Samantha decided to pursue a Pathway centered around Global Issues, and she'll enrich her core studies by connecting the knowledge she acquires in her coursework with the experience she obtains through a variety of these other opportunities. Her Douglass advisor will aid her in identifying the courses and programs that correspond to her goals.
Currently established Educational Pathways are driven by student interests but students are free to Self Design their own Pathways.
Established Pathways include:
Arts & Creativity
Business & Entrepreneurship
Global Issues
Honors
Leadership
Social Justice
Sciences, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM)
